What AI is — in plain English

Free preview

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a kind of computer technology that can do things that usually need human thinking — like understanding language, answering questions, or spotting patterns. You may already use it without realising: predictive text that guesses your next word, voice assistants, or the recommendations you get on shopping and streaming sites.

**The kind you'll meet most.** A very common type today is the AI "chatbot" or "assistant" — built into many phones, websites, and apps. You type a question or request in ordinary language, and it writes back an answer in seconds. It can feel almost like talking to a person. Common examples include the assistants built into search engines and phones, and the well-known chatbots people use to draft messages or look things up.

**What AI is good at.**

- Drafting and rewording text — messages, emails, posts.

- Summarising or simplifying long or complicated information.

- Explaining general topics in plain language.

- Brainstorming ideas and answering general questions quickly.

**What AI is not good at — and can't do.**

- It doesn't truly "understand" or "know" things the way a person does.

- It can be confidently wrong — sounding sure while giving a false answer.

- It has no real judgement, feelings, or accountability.

- It doesn't know your situation, or anything about the specific people you care for.

**A helpful way to think about it.** Picture AI as a clever, fast, but unreliable assistant. It's genuinely useful for help with words and ideas — but it is never the final word, and never a replacement for a trained human being.

This short course shows you how to use AI to save time and to learn, while keeping two things safe at all times: the people you care for, and their private information. Used thoughtfully, AI can take some weight off your shoulders. Used carelessly, it can cause real harm. The difference is knowing the simple rules — which is exactly what the rest of this course covers.
