Why health and safety matters

Free preview

Many of the people you support are more likely to be hurt by everyday things: a slippery floor, a trailing cord, a hot drink, a cluttered hallway. A fall or a burn that a fit young adult would shrug off can badly harm an older or frail person, and take months to heal.

Health and safety is not about rules for the sake of rules. It is about noticing risks and dealing with them before anyone gets hurt — the person you support, you, and anyone else in the home. A good carer keeps their eyes open all the time.

**Know the limits of your role.** You are there to support daily life, not to do the job of a nurse, a doctor, or a trained lifting or first-aid worker. If a task needs training you have not had, do not do it. Ask for help, or ask for the person to get the right support. Knowing when *not* to act is part of keeping people safe.
